I get that! I’m the same way. It’s thanks to increased blood flow to your female bits and effects there too. So hormones spike desire a week or two prior and then increased blood flow spikes it during your period.

There’s nothing freaky about wanting to have (more) sex during your period.
I know a lot of people have a “closed for maintenance”-mindset, but I never understood that, and there’s no medical reason to not engage in all kinds of sex during that time of the month.
It’s been a long time since Mrs Colt had a period but the explanation proffered by @Firefly makes sense… increased blood flow and hormonal changes. Restoring Mrs Colt’s hormonal balance is what led us to our anal only lifestyle. They’re powerful chemical messengers.

If you’re only into vaginal, there’s definitely a laundry related reason for the closed for maintenance mindset. Blood is a freaking pain to get out! For those of us into anal though, it can be significantly less of a concern.
My last ex was the same. We would do it every day up her arse on her period. She seemed very eager. I’d often wonder why she seemed very eager, more than usually and then I’d feel the tampon/string and know it was the beginning of a week long anal festival!
